National Service Scheme (NSS)
The National Service Scheme is an active program operated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, for the personality development of the nation's youth power. Students participating in its activities work together with people in society for the welfare of the community. This includes literacy-related work, environmental protection, health and sanitation, assistance to affected people during emergencies or natural disasters, etc. By engaging in socially useful work during student life, qualities of social service and national service develop in them. The development of these qualities is extremely essential to become an ideal citizen.
The college's National Service Scheme is constantly striving to make students aware of social problems and motivate them to participate in constructive work for their solutions.
Goals and Objectives
The objective of the National Service Scheme is to awaken social consciousness among students and provide them with opportunities as follows:
To work together with people
To engage oneself in creative and constructive social work
To increase knowledge of oneself and the community
To make practical use of one's talents in solving problems
To gain proficiency in implementing democratic leadership
To gain proficiency in program development to make oneself employable
To bridge the gap between educated and uneducated
To awaken desires within oneself to serve the weaker sections of the community
Structure of NSS Programs
Two types of programs are conducted under the National Service Scheme:
1. Regular Programs
Under regular programs, each student registered in the National Service Scheme must complete at least 120 hours of social service work per year as a volunteer, and upon completing 240 hours of social service work over a two-year period, they are awarded a certificate by the university/college.
2. Special Camp Programs
Each NSS unit organizes one ten-day special camp per year. The camp is set up in a village near the university or college. The camp experience holds special significance in special camps. Participants enjoy camp life, experience the duties of a good citizen, and gain knowledge about what services they can provide to society.
Benefits of NSS
The National Service Scheme inspires students toward creative and constructive work, provides opportunities for social service, and plays an important role in refining their personalities and shaping them into dutiful, sensitive, and useful citizens in the future. Certificates obtained from the National Service Scheme are helpful in building a good future for volunteers. Students can use these certificates in government and non-government services. NSS certificate holders are also awarded additional bonus points during admission to various courses in higher classes.
Activities Conducted Under NSS
Various NSS units can undertake diverse programs in adopted areas considering local needs, resources, and skilled persons. Additionally, students are free to undertake service work in other areas as well. The following activities can be conducted under the National Service Scheme:
1. Education and Recreation
Including literacy, school education, education for school dropouts, workshops in children's homes, admission programs, cultural activities, rural and indigenous sports, discussions on eradication of social evils, and organization of awareness programs.
2. Emergency Programs
Students should primarily emphasize programs related to working with people to help them overcome their helplessness. Additionally, providing assistance in relief and rehabilitation work to local people, authorities, and organizations during natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, storms, etc.
3. Environmental Conservation and Protection
Preservation of historical monuments, antiquities, and other cultural heritage and creating awareness about them; awakening environmental consciousness in society; tree plantation, their protection and maintenance; cleaning of roads, streets, drains, ponds, pools, wells, etc. for sanitation; prevention of soil erosion and land improvement; promoting the use of biogas plants and solar energy.
4. Health, Family Welfare, and Nutrition Programs
Vaccination, blood donation, health education and primary healthcare; population education and family welfare; assistance to patients, orphans, and elderly; arrangement for clean drinking water supply; integrated child development and nutritious food programs.
5. Women's Empowerment Programs
Women's education and making them aware of their constitutional and legal rights; suggesting measures for their empowerment; conducting various types of training programs to make them self-reliant.
6. Production-Oriented Programs
Information about improved agricultural methods; pest and weed control; soil testing and fertility care; maintenance of agricultural implements; strengthening and promoting cooperative societies; assistance and guidance in farming, animal husbandry, poultry farming, animal health; creating awareness about the use of agricultural technologies, etc.
7. Other Activities
Based on local needs and priorities.
